Depending upon who you are reaching, I think you have to look for cheap, efficient ways to get your message out. Reaching members is the easy part, reaching nonmembers is the challenge.

Just came back from a seminar and there was discussion about corporate presence on Facebook - complete with videos and blogs. We've used You Tube to house some of our videos - why use space on our server? - and this gives access to members and nonmembers.

But, not everything translates well. We're an impatient bunch. Be sure when you try to expand coverage of a project it makes sense and looks good. If you're out there it should be good, or what's the point?

I'm a video producer who works almost exclusively with non profits and NGOs. Usually, I am commissioned by an organization to create a video for a specific need. This can have a very large range of topics, starting commonly with pieces utilized for fundraising or capital campaigns, but often the videos include marketing pieces, videos that directly serve or expand the mission of an organization, or educational pieces. The list gets far larger than that, and the types of videos we create are so varied, that it is what keeps my job so interesting.

The one trend that I do notice with most non profits and NGOs is that they are not very experienced in the process of having a video created. People also seem to have a slightly hyper focused view that videos are generally created for fundraising or annual dinner applications, and miss the fact that a video can be used internally, externally, via broadcast, internet, and even direct mail via DVD.

This is not to say that I haven't had some incredibly amazing and rewarding experiences working with members of organizations at all different levels.

I'm glad to see this blog starting out, and do hope the conversation picks up and others join in. I'm constantly trying to educate myself about how non profits choose to communicate, as well as what methods are most effective.
